What does the evidence show for ovarian cyst?

• Many pregnancy-associated ovarian findings are discovered on routine scans. Functional cysts can shrink without an operation, while other masses need closer assessment. The word cyst on a report does not by itself identify its type or establish that surgery is necessary. 1
• Ultrasound helps describe whether a finding is mainly fluid-filled or contains solid areas, internal divisions or other features. When the scan cannot characterize it well, the team may consider MRI. Decisions depend on the complete imaging interpretation rather than a single measurement copied from the report. 2
• Monitoring and surgery have different tradeoffs. Symptoms, persistence, suspicious features and complications such as twisting or rupture can change the plan. A planned follow-up scan is active surveillance, and new symptoms should be reported even if the original finding looked reassuring. 1
• In early pregnancy, one-sided pain or bleeding also raises questions beyond an ovarian cyst, including an ectopic pregnancy. A previously seen cyst should not be used at home to explain away worsening pain, shoulder pain or faintness. 3
• Sudden severe or persistent abdominal pain is an urgent maternal warning sign. Seek immediate medical attention if pain becomes intense, especially with dizziness, vomiting or other new symptoms. Tell the team how far along you are and whether a cyst was seen on a recent scan. 4
