Nighttime nausea during pregnancy
By trimester
Weeks 1–13
1st trimester
Nighttime nausea is often most intense now, especially between weeks 6 and 12. Keep a protein snack, like cheese and crackers or a spoonful of nut butter, on your nightstand so you can eat something the moment you wake up queasy without getting out of bed. Taking your vitamin B6 dose at the same time each night helps it become part of the routine instead of something you forget.
Weeks 14–27
2nd trimester
Nausea usually eases for most people by now, but if nighttime queasiness lingers, keep the bedtime snack and B6 habit going rather than dropping it too early. Eating your last full meal a little earlier in the evening, then having a small protein snack closer to bedtime, can help you go to sleep neither too full nor too empty.
Weeks 28–birth
3rd trimester
New or returning nighttime nausea in the third trimester is worth mentioning at your next visit, since heartburn or a growing uterus crowding your stomach can feel similar to earlier pregnancy nausea but need a different approach. A smaller dinner with a bedtime protein snack still helps, but don't assume it's the same issue as first-trimester morning sickness without checking in with your provider.
What does the evidence show for nighttime nausea?
- Nighttime nausea is not unusual: despite the 'morning sickness' name, symptoms can strike at any hour, including well after you've gone to bed. 1
- Small, frequent meals that are bland, dry, and protein-rich are the first thing doctors recommend trying before any medication, which is exactly what a good bedtime snack should look like. 2
- Vitamin B6 is considered safe enough in pregnancy that ACOG recommends it under a doctor's care specifically for nausea and vomiting, which makes it a reasonable bedtime addition alongside a snack. 3
- ACOG's typical vitamin B6 regimen is 10 to 25 mg taken three to four times a day, so a bedtime dose is just one slot in that schedule, not an extra pill on top of it. 4
- Ginger is a reasonable bedtime pairing with B6 for some people: studies using roughly 1,000 mg a day haven't turned up an increased chance of birth defects. 5
- The severe form of pregnancy nausea, hyperemesis gravidarum, is generally marked by ketones in the urine and a loss of at least 5 percent of pre-pregnancy weight, alongside dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. 6
When should I call my provider about nighttime nausea?
Ordinary nighttime queasiness is different from hyperemesis gravidarum, the more severe form of pregnancy nausea that affects roughly 3 in 100 pregnancies and is generally marked by ketones in the urine and a loss of 5 percent or more of pre-pregnancy weight. Call your provider the same day if you cannot keep any fluids down, feel lightheaded or faint when you stand up, or notice the scale moving down instead of up. Nausea severe enough to interfere with eating, drinking, sleeping, or your daily routine, day or night, can call for hospitalization for IV fluids rather than waiting for it to pass. If you are ever unsure which side of the line you are on, make the call. Obstetric teams handle these check-ins as routine, not as overreacting.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my nausea get worse at night instead of better?
By nighttime you've usually gone the longest stretch of your day without eating, and an empty stomach is one of the most common nausea triggers in pregnancy. Fatigue piles on top of that, since feeling tired tends to make queasiness feel worse too. A small snack before bed closes that gap instead of letting your stomach stay empty for 8 or more hours overnight.
What's a good bedtime snack for pregnancy nausea?
Pair a plain carbohydrate with a little protein: crackers with cheese, toast with peanut butter, a hard-boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt all work well. Keep it bland and easy to keep down rather than heavy, greasy, or spicy. Having it ready on your nightstand means you can eat the moment you wake up nauseated, without a trip to the kitchen.
Should I take vitamin B6 at night specifically?
Many people take their last B6 dose of the day at bedtime as one part of the three-to-four-times-daily schedule ACOG describes, rather than as anything special on its own. Pairing it with your bedtime snack is an easy way to remember it. Confirm your total daily dose with your healthcare provider, since going well above the typical amount isn't something to do without guidance.
Does nighttime nausea mean something is wrong with the pregnancy?
No, on its own it doesn't. Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy can happen at any hour, and nighttime symptoms are just as common as morning ones. It's worth calling your provider if you can't keep fluids down for half a day, are losing weight, or feel dizzy when standing, since those can point to hyperemesis gravidarum, which needs extra medical support.
