Is Shilajit Safe During Pregnancy?
What does the evidence say about shilajit during pregnancy?
- NCCIH states that some Ayurvedic preparations may contain lead, mercury, or arsenic in toxic amounts and that only a small number of well-designed trials evaluate Ayurvedic approaches. This guidance applies to the product category but is not a shilajit pregnancy study. 1
- FDA explains that dietary supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness before marketing. A shilajit label or sale in the United States therefore does not mean FDA evaluated that product for pregnancy use. 2
- FDA warns that certain unapproved Ayurvedic products have contained harmful heavy metals, sometimes without the metals appearing on the label, and notes that heavy metals can pass into breast milk. The warning is category-wide rather than specific to every shilajit product. 3
- A laboratory study measured thallium in natural shilajit and commercial supplements, with some supplements containing more than crude samples. It did not study pregnant people, fetal outcomes, or establish whether the measured amounts cause harm in routine use. 4
- An analysis of 193 Ayurvedic products bought online detected lead, mercury, or arsenic in 20.7 percent overall. One listed shilajit product contained measurable lead, but one product cannot define the contents of all brands or batches. 5
Is shilajit safe in each trimester?
- First trimester. There are no human studies that establish shilajit safety during early fetal development. Avoid starting it in the first trimester, and bring the exact label and lot number to your prenatal clinician if exposure already occurred.
- Second trimester. Later pregnancy does not remove the product-quality concern. Shilajit composition varies, and analyses have identified metals in some products, so a purified or tested label does not substitute for pregnancy outcome evidence.
- Third trimester. Do not assume that nearing delivery makes shilajit a low-risk supplement. There is no pregnancy-specific dosing or delivery safety evidence, and clinicians need the exact product information to assess a reported exposure.
Frequently asked questions
Is there human pregnancy research on shilajit?
No adequate human pregnancy outcome study was identified for shilajit. General Ayurvedic guidance and laboratory product analyses raise uncertainty, but they cannot calculate the chance of miscarriage, birth defects, or other outcomes after a specific exposure.
Does shilajit contain heavy metals?
Metal content is product-specific. Researchers measured thallium in natural and commercial shilajit samples, and a separate survey found lead in one listed shilajit product. Those findings do not mean every product is contaminated, but they show why brand-wide reassurance is not justified.
Is shilajit approved by the FDA?
No shilajit dietary supplement is FDA-approved for pregnancy safety or effectiveness. FDA does not approve dietary supplements before marketing in the way it approves prescription drugs, so a product being sold does not establish that it was evaluated for pregnancy use.
Does third-party testing make shilajit safe during pregnancy?
Testing may reduce uncertainty about the contaminants included in that test panel and batch. It cannot supply missing human pregnancy outcome data, guarantee every later batch is identical, or establish a pregnancy dose.
What should I do after taking shilajit before realizing I was pregnant?
Stop taking more and contact your prenatal clinician with the container, ingredient list, brand, and lot number. If the product is recalled, suspected to be contaminated, or you have symptoms of metal exposure, follow FDA advice to seek medical evaluation promptly.
Is shilajit safer after the first trimester?
No evidence establishes a safer trimester for shilajit. The lack of pregnancy studies and the possibility of variable composition remain relevant throughout pregnancy, even though developmental concerns differ by stage.
Is shilajit safe while breastfeeding?
Shilajit has not been established as safe during breastfeeding. FDA notes that heavy metals from contaminated Ayurvedic products can pass into breast milk, while no shilajit study defines infant exposure or outcomes.
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a mineral-rich material used in Ayurvedic products and sold as a dietary supplement. Its natural origin does not standardize its composition or establish pregnancy safety.
