Is pesticide residue on produce safe during pregnancy?

Assigned clinical reviewerPerry Friedman· MD, FACOG-MFMDraft · pending clinical reviewUpdated

What does the evidence say about pesticide residue on produce during pregnancy?

  1. Washing produce and your hands before eating is the specific step recommended to lower pesticide exposure from food. 1
  2. Across 110,829 food samples tested in the European Union, 96.3 percent sat within legal residue limits and about 59 percent had no quantifiable residue at all, with the assessed risk to consumer health described as low. 2
  3. Most studies have not shown a higher chance of birth defects above the background rate from pesticide exposure, though findings on miscarriage are mixed, with some studies suggesting a link and others not. 1
  4. In a 24-week randomized trial, pregnant women given organic produce had lower urinary pyrethroid markers than those given conventional produce (0.27 versus 0.95 micrograms per liter), while the four organophosphate markers showed no significant difference. 3
  5. Having a home or workplace sprayed by a professional exterminator is unlikely to produce a high enough exposure to raise risk, while people who handle pesticides directly are advised to use a respirator, long sleeves, long pants and gloves. 1

Is pesticide residue on produce safe in each trimester?

  • First trimester. Food aversions can make produce hard to face right now. Whatever you can eat is better than skipping fruit and vegetables over residue worry, since folate-rich greens matter most in these weeks.
  • Second trimester. Appetite usually returns, so this is a good stretch to build a wash-everything habit. Rinsing under running water and rubbing firm produce with your hands does most of the work.
  • Third trimester. Nothing changes about the food itself late in pregnancy. If you garden, this is the point where bending and kneeling to apply anything gets awkward, so hand that job over.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy organic while pregnant?

No. A randomized trial in pregnant women showed organic produce lowered one class of pesticide markers in urine, but no study has shown that switching changes pregnancy outcomes. Eating enough produce matters more than which kind.

How should I wash fruits and vegetables during pregnancy?

Plain running water and your hands. Rub firm produce like apples and peppers under the tap, and rinse leafy greens leaf by leaf. Special produce washes have not been shown to beat water, and washing also removes the bacteria that matter more in pregnancy.

Which foods have the most pesticide residue?

Thin-skinned produce that gets eaten whole, like berries and leafy greens, tends to carry more than thick-skinned items you peel. Even so, about 59 percent of tested samples carried no quantifiable residue and 96 percent were within legal limits.

Is it safe to be around a lawn or garden that was just sprayed?

Stay off it until it dries and follow the interval on the product label. Professional application in a home or workplace is unlikely to reach a level of concern, but there is no reason to be the person walking through it.
