Is mackerel safe during pregnancy?
What does the evidence say about mackerel during pregnancy?
- FDA splits mackerel across all three categories: Atlantic and Pacific chub mackerel are Best Choices, Spanish mackerel is a Good Choice, and king mackerel sits in Choices to Avoid. 1
- The mercury spread across mackerel types is wide: Atlantic averages 0.05 parts per million and Pacific chub 0.088, while Spanish mackerel runs 0.182 in the South Atlantic and 0.454 in the Gulf of Mexico, and king mackerel reaches 0.73. 2
- King mackerel appears on the short list of fish to skip entirely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, alongside swordfish, shark, marlin, bigeye tuna, Gulf tilefish, and orange roughy. 3
- Mackerel is one of the classic dark-meat fish behind histamine illness, which develops when fish is held above 4°C and cannot be undone by cooking, with symptoms arriving within roughly 2 hours. 4
- Refrigerated smoked seafood, smoked mackerel included, should be skipped in pregnancy unless it is an ingredient in a fully cooked dish, because listeria raises the chance of uterine infection, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. 5
Is mackerel safe in each trimester?
- First trimester. Because mackerel spans all three FDA categories, the useful habit from the start is reading which mackerel it is rather than reading the word mackerel. Atlantic mackerel is one of the richest low-mercury sources of omega-3 there is, so the safe versions are genuinely worth eating, not just tolerated.
- Second trimester. Mackerel is a dark-meat, oily fish, which is the exact profile behind histamine reactions when the cold chain slips. Buy it looking and smelling fresh, get it into the fridge quickly, and cook it through. Tinned mackerel sidesteps most of that, though the species on the label still decides the weekly allowance.
- Third trimester. Smoked mackerel becomes the thing to watch late in pregnancy, because refrigerated smoked fish belongs to the listeria conversation rather than the mercury one. Hot dishes that cook the smoked fish through are the workaround. Fresh Atlantic mackerel, cooked properly, remains one of the better third-trimester fish for DHA.
Frequently asked questions
Which mackerel is safe during pregnancy?
Atlantic mackerel and Pacific chub mackerel are Best Choices, so two to three 4-ounce servings a week. Spanish mackerel drops to one serving a week with no other fish. King mackerel is off the list entirely. The word on the menu matters more than the word mackerel.
Is king mackerel high in mercury?
Yes, and by a wide margin within its own family. FDA sampling puts king mackerel at 0.73 parts per million, roughly fifteen times the 0.05 measured in Atlantic mackerel. That gap is why one is a staple and the other is on the avoid list.
Can I eat tinned or canned mackerel while pregnant?
The category follows the species, not the packaging, so read the label for which mackerel is in the tin. If it names Atlantic or Pacific chub, it falls under the two to three servings a week allowance. Shelf-stable tins are also outside the refrigerated smoked fish caution.
Is smoked mackerel safe in pregnancy?
Refrigerated smoked mackerel is best skipped on its own, because it is a ready-to-eat chilled fish and that is where listeria turns up. Cooked into a hot pasta, chowder, or bake, it moves out of that category. See our smoked salmon guide for the same logic.
