How does selenium work?
Selenium acts as a constituent of 25 selenoproteins, among them the thioredoxin reductases, the glutathione peroxidases, and selenoprotein P. NIH ODS places thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, reproduction, and protection from oxidative damage and infection among the critical roles those proteins carry. The thyroid connection is the one that matters most early on, while the fetus still depends entirely on the maternal supply. Absorption is not the limiting step anywhere in this picture: the body takes up as much as 90 percent of selenium from selenomethionine, selenium-enriched yeast, selenite, and selenate, which is why a standalone product stacks onto a prenatal so readily.
