How does Alpha-Lipoic acid work?

The safety review this page leans on describes alpha-lipoic acid as a natural short-chain fatty acid that drew research attention as an antioxidant molecule. Beyond that framing, it reports alpha-lipoic acid acting on AMP-activated protein kinase both centrally and peripherally, and activating the PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma receptors, modulating PPAR-regulated genes and raising PPAR-gamma expression in cardiac tissue and aortic smooth muscle. Every one of those pathways comes from laboratory work and clinical research outside pregnancy. Nothing published shows what alpha-lipoic acid does mechanistically in a human pregnancy.

What does the evidence say about Alpha-Lipoic acid in pregnancy?

  • A meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials found alpha-lipoic acid was not associated with an increased risk of any adverse event emerging during supplementation, across doses from 100 mg a day up to 2,400 mg a day, including subsets grouped by pregnancy status. 1
