Which option makes sense?
Choose by single ingredient. Acetaminophen and an oxymetazoline nasal spray carry the smallest exposure, guaifenesin and dextromethorphan are reasonable short-term, and oral pseudoephedrine is the one ingredient with a measured hit to milk production.

Can I take cold medicine while breastfeeding?
Usually yes, but pick by single ingredient rather than by symptom label on the front of the box. Multi-symptom products bundle four or five actives, and the one causing the problem is often an ingredient you did not need. Confirm your specific list with your provider or a pharmacist.
What cold medicine will not affect my milk supply?
Acetaminophen has no reported supply effect. Oxymetazoline nasal spray is barely absorbed, so it does not reach the systems that regulate milk. The ingredient with the documented supply effect is oral pseudoephedrine, where one 60 mg dose was followed by a 24 percent drop over 24 hours.
Is Sudafed safe while breastfeeding?
Small amounts in milk are unlikely to harm a nursing infant, though irritability has been reported. The real issue is supply. LactMed advises clinicians to avoid it for mothers with newly established lactation or an already low supply, and repeated dosing interferes with lactation.
Can I take DayQuil or NyQuil while nursing?
These are combination products, so the answer depends on the version in your cabinet. Read the actives. Formulas built on acetaminophen, dextromethorphan and guaifenesin sit in the reassuring range. Ones that add phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine bring the supply question with them.
How long after taking cold medicine can I breastfeed?
For the ingredients here there is no standard pump-and-dump interval, because the amounts reaching milk are small. Pseudoephedrine has a milk half-life of 5.5 hours, so if you want to space a dose from a feed, that number is the one to plan around.
