  • A 2023 isotope-tracer comparison in healthy volunteers measured fractional zinc absorption from 2 mg doses at 8.94 percent for zinc sulfate, 19.13 percent for zinc gluconate and 34.58 percent for zinc aspartate, so aspartate absorbed more than twice as much as sulfate. Picolinate, citrate, oxide and bisglycinate were not tested. 3
  • MotherToBaby gives the same pregnancy figures, 11 mg a day as the RDA for ages 19 and up with a 40 mg upper limit, and states it is not recommended to take more zinc than the RDA in a day. Zinc is also a normal part of breast milk. 4

Which option makes sense?

Citrate and gluconate are the two forms with a published NIH absorption figure at about 61 percent, oxide sits at 50 percent, and picolinate is a marketing story without data in these sources.

Which form of zinc is best absorbed?

Among the forms with published numbers, citrate and gluconate are similar at about 61 percent and oxide sits lower at 50 percent. Picolinate is the interesting gap: it is heavily marketed as the superior form, and it does not appear in either source used here.

What form of zinc is in prenatal vitamins?

It varies, and the label is the only way to tell. ODS names zinc sulfate, zinc acetate and zinc gluconate as the primary supplement forms, with citrate and oxide also used. Since forms differ in absorption, the form line matters as much as the milligram line.

How much zinc is safe during pregnancy?

The RDA is 11 mg a day at 19 and over, 12 mg at 14 to 18, and the tolerable upper intake level is 40 mg. MotherToBaby's position is that taking more than the RDA is not recommended, so an immune-support product on top of a prenatal is worth totaling up.

Does zinc upset your stomach?

It can. ODS lists nausea, dizziness, headaches, gastric distress, vomiting and loss of appetite as effects of high zinc intakes. In early pregnancy that overlaps almost exactly with morning sickness, which makes a new zinc supplement easy to misread as worsening nausea.

Can zinc interfere with copper or iron?

Both directions matter. Iron supplements of 25 mg or more taken at the same time reduce zinc absorption. Going the other way, 50 mg or more of zinc over weeks can inhibit copper absorption and lower HDL cholesterol. Spacing the doses is the usual practical fix.
