Smell sensitivity during pregnancy
By trimester
Weeks 1–13
1st trimester
This is the peak. Nausea and vomiting affects about 80% of pregnant women and usually starts between 4 and 9 weeks, and offensive odors were named as a nausea trigger by 52% of women in one community survey. Practical moves: run the kitchen fan, hand off the trash, and switch to unscented soap and detergent for a while.
Weeks 14–27
2nd trimester
Most people find the smell reactivity settles as the nausea does, typically somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks. Foods you wrote off in month two are often fine again by month five, so it is worth quietly retrying them rather than assuming they are gone for good.
Weeks 28–birth
3rd trimester
Late-pregnancy congestion dulls smell for some people and sharpens aversions for others. If a specific smell is still making you gag this far along, or you are still vomiting, mention it. Persistent vomiting late in pregnancy is not something to simply live with.
What does the evidence show for smell sensitivity?
- Offensive odors ranked among the most common triggers of nausea and vomiting reported by women in a community survey, named by 52%, behind food poisoning and flu and roughly level with pregnancy itself. 1
- Foods or odors that never bothered you before can now trigger nausea, and the practical advice is to stay away from them, use a fan when cooking, and have someone else empty the trash. 2
- Measured odour sensitivity did not correlate with nausea scores in 53 women in early pregnancy, which suggests that how the brain processes a smell matters more than how strongly the nose detects it. 3
- Nausea and vomiting affects about 80% of pregnant women, typically beginning between 4 and 9 weeks, peaking between 7 and 12 weeks, and easing between 12 and 16 weeks. 4
- Smell can work in your favor too: inhaling lemon scent when nausea struck lowered nausea and vomiting scores compared with placebo in a double-blind randomized trial of 100 pregnant women. 5
When should I call my provider about smell sensitivity?
Smell sensitivity itself is not dangerous, but when it is driving nausea to the point that you cannot keep food or fluids down, that can point toward hyperemesis gravidarum, the more severe form of pregnancy nausea that causes weight loss and dehydration and can require hospitalization. Consult your healthcare provider the same day if smell-triggered nausea or vomiting is keeping you from eating, drinking, sleeping, or getting through your day, rather than waiting for it to pass on its own. Trust your read on your own body. If something feels off beyond the list above, please consult your healthcare provider rather than waiting it out.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my sense of smell so strong in early pregnancy?
Honestly, the mechanism is not settled. When researchers actually measured odour detection in 53 women in early pregnancy, sensitivity did not track with nausea scores at all. What seems to shift is how the brain processes and reacts to a smell, not how well the nose picks it up.
When does smell sensitivity start in pregnancy?
It usually shows up alongside the nausea, which typically begins between 4 and 9 weeks and peaks between 7 and 12. For many people the smell change is the first thing they notice, sometimes before the nausea has a name.
Does a heightened sense of smell mean worse morning sickness?
There is a real link between smell and pregnancy nausea. Odors were reported as a nausea trigger by 52% of women in one survey, and in a small group of women with congenital anosmia, nausea and vomiting of pregnancy occurred in only one pregnancy. But measured sensitivity alone does not predict how bad your nausea will be.
How do I stop smells from making me nauseous while pregnant?
Remove what you can and mask what you cannot. Run the extractor fan while cooking, delegate the trash, go unscented on soap and laundry, and keep windows open. A pleasant scent can help actively too: lemon inhalation beat placebo for nausea in a randomized trial.
