Motion sickness during pregnancy
By trimester
Weeks 1–13
1st trimester
The overlap is at its worst here, since pregnancy nausea peaks between 7 and 12 weeks. Sit up front, keep your eyes on the horizon, put the phone away, and eat something small beforehand. An empty stomach makes both kinds of nausea louder at the same time.
Weeks 14–27
2nd trimester
This is usually the easiest stretch for travel. Motion sickness can still show up on winding roads or at sea, but you are far less likely to be starting from a baseline of all-day nausea, which changes how a four-hour drive feels.
Weeks 28–birth
3rd trimester
Long trips get physically harder now, and many cruise ships stop allowing travel around 23 weeks. Build in stops, keep fluids within reach, and ask your ob-gyn ahead of time which motion sickness medicines are appropriate for you rather than picking something up at the terminal.
What does the evidence show for motion sickness?
- A personal history of motion sickness carried more than three times the odds of severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in a cohort of 2,411 pregnant women, an association that held after adjusting for age, parity, BMI, smoking, and employment. 1
- Seasickness, also called motion sickness, is one of the most common health problems for people on a cruise and can bring nausea, dizziness, weakness, headache, and vomiting. 2
- Doxylamine succinate with pyridoxine hydrochloride is ACOG's recommended first-line option for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, and studies of hundreds of thousands of women have not found an increased chance of birth defects. 3
- Nausea and vomiting affects about 80% of pregnant women, usually starting between 4 and 9 weeks and peaking between 7 and 12 weeks, so travel in that window begins from a higher baseline. 4
- Evidence for P6 acupressure and acustimulation was limited across a Cochrane review of 41 nausea and vomiting trials, which makes wristbands a low-risk thing to try rather than a reliable answer. 5
When should I call my provider about motion sickness?
Motion sickness that ends when the trip ends is a nuisance. What is not a nuisance is vomiting that keeps going after you are off the boat, out of the car, or back on solid ground, especially when fluids will not stay down. Speak with your provider once queasiness is interfering with eating, drinking, sleeping, or your normal day, and take constant vomiting with weight loss and dehydration as the hyperemesis gravidarum picture, which can require hospitalization. Travel queasiness appearing for the first time at the 10th week or later, in someone who has never had it, is also worth flagging, since nausea starting that late may come from another cause. When in doubt, call your obstetric team the same day. Early input almost always beats waiting, and the on-call line exists exactly for this.
Frequently asked questions
Why is motion sickness worse during pregnancy?
You are stacking two sources of nausea. Pregnancy nausea affects roughly 80% of women and peaks between 7 and 12 weeks, so motion adds to something already there. The link runs the other way too: women with a history of motion sickness had over three times the odds of severe morning sickness.
What can I take for motion sickness while pregnant?
That is a question for your ob-gyn before you travel, not at the pharmacy counter. ACOG specifically advises asking ahead about which medicines are appropriate for you. For pregnancy nausea generally, doxylamine with vitamin B6 is the recommended first-line option, with a large safety record behind it.
Do Sea-Bands help motion sickness in pregnancy?
They may, and they cost almost nothing to try. One randomized study found less nausea and vomiting while bands were worn, though the Cochrane review across all trials calls the evidence limited. Since there is no drug involved, trying them before a trip is low risk.
Is it safe to travel by car or boat while pregnant?
Generally yes, with planning. ACOG notes that if seasickness has never been an issue for you, sea travel may not upset your stomach, but a first cruise while pregnant is not the moment to find out. Many ships stop allowing travel around 23 weeks, so check before booking.
