Blurry vision during pregnancy

Weeks 1–13

1st trimester

Noticeable blurry vision is uncommon this early, since the corneal and tear-film changes behind most pregnancy-related blur build up later in pregnancy. If it shows up now, mention it at your next visit rather than assuming it is routine.

Weeks 14–27

2nd trimester

This is when hormone-driven corneal swelling and dry eye typically start blurring vision, especially for contact lens wearers. It is also when your provider starts watching more closely for preeclampsia, which is uncommon before 20 weeks.

Weeks 28–birth

3rd trimester

Blurry vision is most common now, mostly from the same benign corneal and tear-film changes. New blurry vision paired with a headache, swelling in your face or hands, or pain in the upper abdomen is different: that combination points toward preeclampsia and needs a same-day call.

What does the evidence show for blurry vision?

• Pregnancy hormones increase corneal thickness and curvature and disrupt the tear film, producing temporary refractive blur and dry-eye symptoms that are most noticeable in the second and third trimesters. 1
• A transient loss of near-focusing ability (accommodation) can also occur during pregnancy and lactation, and pregnancy-related vision and contact lens changes are usually temporary, reversing in the first two months after delivery. 1
• Blurred vision is listed as a symptom of preeclampsia, and vision problems, including temporary blindness, are listed as a symptom of eclampsia, the more severe, seizure-causing form of the condition. 2
• Vision problems are one of several possible signs of pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorders, alongside high blood pressure itself, protein in the urine, and headache, and providers typically run more tests when blood pressure runs high, especially after 20 weeks. 3
• Gestational diabetes does not typically cause blurry vision: NIDDK lists being thirstier than normal and urinating more often as the only possible symptoms and notes that gestational diabetes usually has no symptoms at all, which is why routine screening matters more than watching for signs. 4

When should I call my provider about blurry vision?

New or sudden blurry vision or temporary vision loss, especially together with a headache that will not go away, swelling in your face or hands, or pain in the upper abdomen, is a preeclampsia and eclampsia warning pattern rather than the ordinary hormonal blur of pregnancy. NICHD lists blurred vision among preeclampsia's symptoms and vision problems, including temporary blindness, among eclampsia's, with providers typically running more tests when blood pressure runs high in the second half of pregnancy. This combination calls for a same-day call to your provider rather than waiting for a scheduled visit. Whatever the pattern, any symptom that feels beyond your usual range is a reason to call: obstetric teams expect these questions and would rather hear early than late.
