Are reheating leftovers safe during pregnancy?

Assigned clinical reviewerMichael Yuzefovich· MD, FACOGDraft · pending clinical reviewUpdated

What does the evidence say about reheating leftovers during pregnancy?

  1. Most bacteria are killed when food reaches an internal temperature above 74°C (165.2°F), which is the number behind the steaming-hot rule. 1
  2. Reheating has a real limit: warming food before eating removes vegetative bacterial cells but does not destroy the heat-stable emetic toxin some bacteria leave behind in cooked rice and pasta. 2
  3. Listeria multiplies during cold storage, so the longer a ready-to-eat food sits in the refrigerator, the greater the chance it reaches a level that makes someone ill. 3
  4. Listeriosis is roughly ten times more common in pregnancy than in the general population and peaks in the third trimester, which is why the reheating rule matters more now than it usually would. 4
  5. The range from 4°C to 60°C is where microbial growth runs fastest, so leftovers should move through it quickly in both directions, cooling down fast and heating up fast. 5

Is reheating leftovers safe in each trimester?

  • First trimester. Nausea can make batch cooking feel like the only way to get through the week, and that is fine. The habit worth building now is portioning food into shallow containers so it chills fast, because a deep pot of chili can sit in the warm range for hours in the middle even after you put the lid on.
  • Second trimester. Appetite usually returns and leftovers start getting eaten in earnest. Rice and pasta deserve their own rule: cook them, cool them fast, and keep them cold, because the bacteria that grow in starchy leftovers can leave behind a heat-stable toxin that a second heating will not undo.
  • Third trimester. Freezer meals stacked up for the newborn weeks are one of the smartest things you can do now. Label everything with a date, reheat straight from frozen or from the fridge rather than the counter, and give each portion a stir partway through so there are no cold pockets.

Frequently asked questions

How hot do leftovers need to be when pregnant?

Steaming hot throughout, which means above 74°C (165°F) at the center. A cheap probe thermometer settles it in seconds. Microwaves heat unevenly, so stir halfway and let the food stand a minute so the heat evens out before you check.

How many days are leftovers good for in pregnancy?

A couple of days is the sensible window rather than a full week. Listeria keeps growing at refrigerator temperatures, so time in the fridge works against you even when the food smells and looks completely normal.

Can you reheat leftovers twice while pregnant?

Better not to. Every trip back to room temperature is another stretch in the range where bacteria multiply. Take out only what you plan to eat, reheat that portion once, and keep the rest cold and untouched.

Is it safe to eat cold leftovers when pregnant?

Cold leftovers skip the step that would kill anything that grew in the fridge. Reheating until steaming is the safer habit during pregnancy, especially for meat, poultry, seafood, rice, and anything with gravy or sauce.
