What does the evidence say about pitocin for labor induction during pregnancy?

  1. The current Pitocin label requires IV infusion by pump for labor induction, with an individualized low starting rate and gradual increases based on uterine response. It requires electronic monitoring of uterine activity and fetal heart rate throughout the infusion. 1
  2. The label directs immediate discontinuation for uterine hyperactivity or fetal distress. Excessive or prolonged contractions can contribute to reduced uteroplacental blood flow, fetal heart-rate changes, tissue injury, hemorrhage, and rare uterine rupture. 1
