Is peppermint tea safe during pregnancy?

Assigned clinical reviewerMichael Yuzefovich· MD, FACOGDraft · pending clinical reviewUpdated

What does the evidence say about peppermint tea during pregnancy?

  1. Peppermint, as both leaf and oil, has been used as a food and beverage for centuries and is generally recognized as safe in typical culinary amounts. 1
  2. Concentrated peppermint oil is a different exposure than tea and can cause allergic reactions, heartburn, or interact with medications. 1
  3. Peppermint relaxes the muscle that normally keeps stomach acid down, which can worsen reflux in some people: one reason those with heartburn often prefer ginger tea instead. 1
  4. Always check the full ingredient list on herbal tea blends: multi-herb teas can include things like licorice root or senna that carry their own pregnancy caution, even when peppermint is the main flavor. 2

Is peppermint tea safe in each trimester?

  • First trimester. Many people reach for peppermint tea in the first trimester for mild nausea. Ordinary cups haven't been linked to any specific harm in the research available.
  • Second trimester. Moderate amounts are still fine. Peppermint can ease reflux for some people, but it can also relax the muscle that keeps stomach acid down, so check our heartburn guide if symptoms stick around.
  • Third trimester. The same guidance applies. Avoid high-dose peppermint oil near delivery without talking to your provider first.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups of peppermint tea per day are generally reasonable?

One to three cups of standard peppermint tea a day is broadly considered fine in pregnancy. Check with your provider if you have reflux, take medication, or use concentrated peppermint elsewhere.

Is peppermint essential oil the same as peppermint tea?

No. Essential oil is highly concentrated and shouldn't be taken in tea-sized amounts. See our essential oils safety guide.

Does peppermint help with morning sickness?

Some people find peppermint tea or peppermint aromatherapy soothing for mild nausea. Ginger and vitamin B6 have stronger research behind them for pregnancy nausea specifically.

Can peppermint tea worsen heartburn?

It can for some people, because peppermint relaxes the muscle that keeps stomach acid down. If you have significant reflux, ginger tea is a common alternative.
