Is laser hair removal safe during pregnancy?

Assigned clinical reviewerPerry Friedman· MD, FACOG-MFMDraft · pending clinical reviewUpdated

What does the evidence say about laser hair removal during pregnancy?

  1. A systematic review of cosmetic procedures during pregnancy and lactation recommends limiting hair removal to waxing, shaving, and topical options rather than permanent procedures. 1
  2. Lasers used cosmetically to remove hair carry risks that include pain, infection, bleeding, scarring, and changes in skin color. 2
  3. Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin inside the hair follicle, and reported side effects include redness, swelling around the follicles, crusting, and both lightening and darkening of the skin depending on skin tone. 3
  4. Pregnancy raises melanin production, which is what drives melasma and other dark patches, and ACOG advises daily sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat to keep those changes from deepening. 4
  5. The wider literature sets a two-part test for any procedure during pregnancy, safe and necessary, and elective hair removal fails the second half of it. 5

Is laser hair removal safe in each trimester?

  • First trimester. Nearly every clinic defers here, and good providers ask about pregnancy at booking. Nothing suggests a single session before you knew has caused harm, but the elective ones get postponed.
  • Second trimester. Hormone-driven hair growth changes are in full swing, so results from a session now may not hold. Melasma is also more likely, and laser energy targets pigment.
  • Third trimester. Comfort joins the list. Lying still for a long session is harder late in pregnancy, and skin is at its most reactive and most likely to darken afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Can the laser reach the baby?

The energy is absorbed in the skin and hair follicle, and FDA notes laser procedures use non-ionizing radiation, so they do not carry the long-term concerns that x-rays do. The reason for waiting is the absence of pregnancy studies, not radiation reaching the uterus.

I had a session before I found out I was pregnant. Is that a problem?

No published evidence links a session to pregnancy harm, and clinics defer because the research does not exist, not because a problem has been identified. Tell your ob-gyn at your next visit and cancel any remaining appointments in the package.

What can I use for hair removal instead during pregnancy?

The pregnancy review points specifically to waxing, shaving, and topical hair removal as the options to stay with. Shaving is the simplest late in pregnancy, when reaching gets awkward and skin bruises more easily.

Can I restart laser sessions while breastfeeding?

That same review found most of the cosmetic procedures it examined were acceptable during lactation, with fat transfer, sclerotherapy, and tumescent liposuction as the exceptions. Confirm timing with your own clinician and tell the studio you are nursing.
