Is burrata safe during pregnancy?

Assigned clinical reviewerMichael Yuzefovich· MD, FACOGDraft · pending clinical reviewUpdated

What does the evidence say about burrata during pregnancy?

  1. Fresh cheeses hold more water than aged ones, and that extra moisture gives bacteria more room to multiply, which is the reason soft cheese gets singled out in pregnancy advice at all. 1
  2. Once a cheese has been pasteurized, any increased risk from bacteria or other pathogens is very small, and the product is not considered to raise risks when eaten during pregnancy or breastfeeding. 1
  3. Pregnant people are roughly 17 times more likely to develop listeriosis than the general population, and infection during the first trimester has been associated with about a 65 percent chance of miscarriage. 2
  4. Risk modeling puts an artisanal raw milk soft-ripened cheese at about 157 times the listeria risk per serving of the same cheese made from pasteurized milk. 3
  5. Soft cheeses are considered acceptable when the label states they are made from pasteurized milk, and keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F slows the spread of any bacteria that do get in. 4

Is burrata safe in each trimester?

  • First trimester. This is the strictest window, since listeriosis caught early in pregnancy carries the highest chance of loss. If you love burrata, buy it yourself from a sealed tub that says pasteurized rather than ordering it out where nobody can tell you how it was made.
  • Second trimester. Restaurant burrata is the practical problem now that appetite is back. Servers can usually check the tub in the walk-in if you ask, and imported artisan burrata is the version most likely to be made from raw milk.
  • Third trimester. Burrata is sold very young and goes off fast. Keep your refrigerator at or below 40°F, eat it within a day or two of opening, and skip any that has been sitting on an antipasto board at room temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Is burrata pasteurized?

Most burrata sold in US supermarkets is, and the tub will say so. Imported artisan burrata and cheese-counter burrata are the ones worth asking about, since traditional producers may start with raw milk. If the packaging does not say pasteurized, assume it is unknown.

Can I eat burrata at a restaurant while pregnant?

You can ask, and it is a reasonable question. Kitchens keep the original tub and can check the label. If nobody can confirm it, ordering something else is the simpler call than guessing about a cheese that is eaten cold and uncooked.

What happens if I ate burrata before I knew I was pregnant?

Almost certainly nothing. Listeriosis is rare even among people who eat higher-risk foods, and most exposures cause no illness at all. Watch for fever, chills, muscle aches, or flu-like symptoms in the following weeks and call your provider if they show up.

Is burrata safe if it is cooked?

Heating changes the calculation, since bacteria that might be present do not survive proper cooking. The catch is that burrata is almost never cooked. Melting it briefly over hot pasta is not the same as heating it through until it is steaming.
