Is bubble tea safe during pregnancy
What does the evidence say about bubble tea during pregnancy?
- Bubble tea's caffeine counts toward the 200 mg daily total most experts recommend during pregnancy, and there's no fixed number for a boba drink since tea type, steep time, and size all change the dose. 1
- For comparison, an 8-ounce cup of brewed tea has roughly 48 mg of caffeine while a 12-ounce specialty coffee-shop drink can run to 235 mg, which shows how much size and preparation swing the dose in a milky, tea-based drink like bubble tea. 1
- Caffeine clearance slows substantially during pregnancy because the liver enzyme that breaks it down loses much of its activity, stretching caffeine's half-life from about 4 to 5 hours normally to roughly 15 hours by late pregnancy. 2
- A dose-response analysis across 12 studies found each additional 100 mg of daily caffeine intake in pregnancy, about one cup of coffee or two cups of tea, was linked to a 3% increase in the odds of low birth weight. 3
- Moderate caffeine intake that stayed within current guidelines during early pregnancy was associated with reassuring outcomes in one analysis, including no significant link to gestational hypertension or preeclampsia. 4
Is bubble tea safe in each trimester?
- First trimester. Morning sickness may make a cold, sweet bubble tea appealing or unappealing depending on the day. If you do drink one, the same 200 mg daily caffeine ceiling applies from the start of pregnancy, so count it alongside any coffee, tea, or chocolate you have that day.
- Second trimester. Nothing about bubble tea changes structurally in the second trimester, so the same caffeine-counting and sugar-awareness habits from the first trimester still apply. This is also a good checkpoint to ask a favorite shop whether its milk or creamer is pasteurized if you're unsure.
- Third trimester. Caffeine clears much more slowly late in pregnancy, with the half-life stretching to roughly 15 hours by the third trimester. That means the same size cup delivers a longer-lasting dose than it did before you were pregnant, so leaning toward a lighter tea base makes more sense now than ever.
Caffeine in common drinks, for comparison
| Drink | Approximate caffeine | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brewed tea, 8 oz | 48 mg | A rough baseline for a lighter bubble tea base before size or steep time change it |
| Regular brewed coffee, 8 oz | 137 mg | For comparison only, not a bubble tea measurement |
| Specialty coffee-shop coffee, 12 oz | 235 mg | Shows how much size alone can move the total |
| Energy drink (Red Bull, 8.4 oz) | 67 mg | For comparison only, not a bubble tea measurement |
Frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in a bubble tea?
It varies a lot. There's no standard recipe, so caffeine depends on the tea base (black tea runs higher than green, and fruit or herbal bases can be caffeine-free), how long it steeps, and the size of the cup. When in doubt, ask the shop what tea base they use or choose a smaller size.
Are tapioca pearls safe to eat during pregnancy?
The pearls themselves are cooked cassava starch with no specific pregnancy warning attached to them. The bigger considerations with bubble tea are the caffeine in the tea base and the added sugar in the syrup, not the pearls.
Is the milk in boba tea pasteurized?
Milk and dairy creamers sold by US shops are standard retail dairy, which is pasteurized like any other milk you'd buy at a grocery store. If a shop uses an imported or specialty dairy product you don't recognize, it's fine to ask.
How much sugar is in a typical bubble tea?
Many bubble teas default to a fairly sweet pour since the syrup is added separately from the tea. Asking for reduced sugar, often offered in 25% increments, cuts the added sugar and calories without changing the caffeine content.
What is the safest bubble tea order during pregnancy?
A smaller size, a lighter or caffeine-free tea base, and reduced sugar is the combination that keeps every variable in check. Count whatever caffeine it has toward your 200 mg daily total for the day.
