What can an AMH test tell you about fertility?
What does the evidence say about amh testing for fertility?
- AMH is measured in a blood sample and is often used during fertility evaluation or IVF planning. The hormone reflects the small-follicle population indirectly. The laboratory number is not a direct inventory of eggs and cannot describe the health of each egg. 1
- ASRM finds AMH useful for anticipating the number of eggs obtained with ovarian stimulation, but much less useful for predicting pregnancy or live birth on its own. Low AMH is not proof that natural conception is impossible, and high AMH does not guarantee pregnancy. 2
- The value of testing depends on the clinical question. ASRM advises against using ovarian-reserve markers as general fertility screening in people without an indication for infertility evaluation. Ask what decision the result will change before buying repeated tests for reassurance. 3
- Hormonal contraception can lower measured AMH, and results need interpretation in that context. Do not stop contraception simply to obtain a higher-looking number. Discuss whether a result needs clarification and how any change in testing or contraception fits your pregnancy intentions. 2
- Laboratories can use different methods, units, and reference intervals. Bring the complete report when comparing results over time. A change in the number deserves interpretation, not an automatic conclusion that a supplement worked or that fertility suddenly disappeared. 4
When is an AMH result useful in fertility planning?
- Before testing, ask what decision the AMH result would help inform.
- When results return, review the units, laboratory, age, and medication context.
- During fertility care, use response to the actual plan alongside laboratory markers.
Questions for your fertility or prenatal team
| Decision point | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Is the question stimulation response or a broader fertility concern? |
| Limits | Separate follicle quantity from egg quality and pregnancy probability. |
| Context | Review age, contraception, and other clinical findings. |
| Comparison | Keep full reports rather than isolated numbers. |
Frequently asked questions
Does AMH measure egg quality?
No. It supplies information related to the follicle pool and potential response to stimulation. It does not test the chromosomes or developmental potential of individual eggs.
Can low AMH mean natural pregnancy is impossible?
Not by itself. AMH is a poor independent predictor of unassisted conception. The clinician should interpret it with age, ovulation, tubal and sperm factors, and the overall history.
Does AMH have to be drawn on cycle day 3?
AMH can generally be measured at different points in the menstrual cycle. Other hormone tests may have cycle-specific timing, so confirm what else is included in the blood draw.
Can birth control affect the result?
Hormonal contraception can lower measured AMH. Tell the clinician what you use and ask whether it affects interpretation. Do not change contraception without a plan.
Does a high AMH result establish PCOS?
No. High AMH can occur with PCOS, but the result alone does not establish the condition. Symptoms, history, and other clinical findings are needed.
Can an AMH result tell a clinic to refuse IVF automatically?
ASRM advises that extremely low AMH should not by itself be used to deny IVF. It can help frame realistic expectations about response, alongside the rest of the assessment.
Why is my number different from someone else's report?
The units, laboratory method, age, and clinical circumstances may differ. Compare the full reports with a clinician rather than interpreting numbers copied into a discussion forum.
Can AMH tell me exactly when menopause will happen?
No. It cannot supply an individual menopause date. Ask what the result does and does not mean for the decision you are actually making now.
