How does pantothenic acid work?

Pantothenic acid's main function is building two carriers rather than acting on its own: coenzyme A and acyl carrier protein. Coenzyme A takes part in fatty acid synthesis and degradation, the transfer of acetyl and acyl groups, and a long list of other anabolic and catabolic processes, while acyl carrier protein's role centers on fatty acid synthesis. That biochemistry is what sits underneath the plain-language version, that B5 helps turn food into usable energy and helps make and break down fats. About 85 percent of dietary pantothenic acid arrives as coenzyme A or phosphopantetheine, which digestive enzymes convert to free pantothenic acid before it is taken up by active transport, and possibly by simple diffusion at higher doses.

What does the evidence say about pantothenic acid in pregnancy?

Panels list this as pantothenic acid, calcium pantothenate, or pantethine, a dimeric form of pantetheine. The spread of amounts is wide: NIH ODS puts multivitamin and multimineral products around 10 mg against up to 1,000 mg in B-complex or standalone pantothenic acid supplements. The pregnancy adequate intake is 6 mg a day, so a standalone bottle can carry many times over what a day calls for. No upper limit has been set, which reflects the absence of documented human toxicity rather than a reason to reach for the high end.

What should I know before taking pantothenic acid?

Please consult your healthcare provider before adding this supplement to a prenatal regimen, particularly if you are on prescription medication or have a scheduled procedure. Do I need to take a separate vitamin B5 supplement during pregnancy?

Most pregnant women already get enough pantothenic acid from a normal diet plus their prenatal vitamin, since it's found in almost every food group. Extra B5 is also available in B-complex and multivitamin supplements if you're curious, but check with your provider before adding one specifically for this nutrient.

What foods are highest in pantothenic acid?

Beef liver, fortified breakfast cereal, sunflower seeds, mushrooms (especially shiitake), chicken, avocado, broccoli, and whole grains are all solid sources. Because it's spread across so many food groups, a normal varied diet usually gets you there without extra effort.

Is it safe to take more than the recommended amount of vitamin B5 while pregnant?

No toxicity has been reported in humans even at very high doses, and no upper limit has been set. That said, there's no known extra benefit to going above 6 mg a day during pregnancy, and very large amounts of several grams have caused mild diarrhea in some people, so more isn't automatically better. Does pantothenic acid help with pregnancy nausea?
