Gas-X vs Beano during pregnancy
How do the options compare?
Each option is compared on mechanism, when it has to be taken relative to a meal, whether it is absorbed into the body, the published dosing, and what randomized evidence exists.
| Option | Studied pregnancy dose | Guideline support | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simethicone (Gas-X) | 40 to 125 mg orally four times daily as needed, after meals and at bedtime, maximum 500 mg a day | Not absorbed orally, excreted in the feces; StatPearls states it is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding because it is not absorbed systemically | A non-systemic surfactant that lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles already in the gut. Reported adverse effects are mild diarrhea and nausea. Works after the fact, so it can be taken when symptoms appear. |
| Alpha-galactosidase (Beano) | Taken at the beginning of each meal; the trial used drops or a tablet by body weight, three times a day for 2 weeks | Reduced global distress, days with moderate to severe bloating, and the proportion of patients with flatulence versus placebo, with no adverse events reported in that trial | An enzyme that acts on the carbohydrates in the meal itself, so the timing is not optional. The randomized evidence is in a pediatric population, not a pregnant one. |
| Dietary changes | No product; reduce the named trigger foods | NIDDK names cruciferous vegetables, legumes, high fiber, fructose and lactose foods, and sugar-free products with sweeteners ending in ol | Also cuts swallowed air, which comes from chewing gum, sucking hard candy, fizzy drinks, eating or drinking too fast, and loose-fitting dentures. |
- Simethicone is a silicone compound that works as a non-systemic surfactant, decreasing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract. Adult dosing is 40 to 125 mg orally four times daily as needed after meals and at bedtime, with a maximum daily dose of 500 mg. 1
- Simethicone is not absorbed orally and is excreted in the feces, and StatPearls states that because it is not absorbed systemically it is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Reported adverse effects are mild diarrhea and nausea. 1
- Alpha-galactosidase has randomized evidence in a non-pregnant population. In a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 52 patients aged 4 to 17 dosed at the beginning of each meal three times a day for 2 weeks, it reduced global distress (p=0.02), days with moderate to severe bloating (p=0.03) and the proportion with flatulence (p=0.02), with no adverse events reported. 2
- Gas enters the digestive tract when you swallow air and when bacteria in the large intestine break down undigested carbohydrates. People pass gas an average of 8 to 14 times a day, up to 25 times a day is considered normal, and people typically belch up to 30 times a day. 3
- Diet is the lever underneath both products. NIDDK suggests eating less of the foods that increase gas symptoms, naming cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and kale, legumes including beans, peas and lentils, foods high in fiber, fructose or lactose, and sugar-free candies and gums with sweeteners whose names end in ol. 4
Which option makes sense?
Beano is a before-the-meal decision and Gas-X is an after-the-fact one. Simethicone has the stronger pregnancy logic because nothing is absorbed. Neither replaces adjusting the foods and the swallowed air that generate the gas in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gas-X safe during pregnancy?
StatPearls states that because simethicone is not absorbed systemically it is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is excreted in the feces. That is the cleanest safety logic on the shelf, though it is still worth a mention to your provider alongside everything else you take.
Is Beano safe during pregnancy?
There is no pregnancy trial of alpha-galactosidase. The randomized evidence comes from 52 patients aged 4 to 17 where no adverse events were reported. That is reassuring about tolerability but it does not answer the pregnancy question, so ask your provider before using it.
How much Gas-X can I take in a day?
Published adult dosing is 40 to 125 mg up to four times daily as needed, after meals and at bedtime, with a maximum daily dose of 500 mg. Follow the package directions on your specific product and confirm with your provider or pharmacist.
Does simethicone get absorbed into your body?
No. Simethicone is not absorbed orally and leaves in the feces. That is exactly why it is easy to reason about: it works on the surface tension of gas bubbles inside your gut rather than doing anything systemic.
What helps trapped gas pain in the third trimester?
Start with the inputs, since gas comes from swallowed air and from bacteria breaking down undigested carbohydrates. Cutting fizzy drinks, gum and hard candy reduces the swallowed-air half. For the fermentation half, the named trigger foods are cruciferous vegetables, legumes, and high fructose or lactose foods.
