Are probiotics safe during pregnancy?

None of the strain trials cited here enrolled pregnant participants, so the honest answer is that the efficacy data and the pregnancy data are separate questions. NCCIH also notes severe or fatal infections have been reported in premature infants given probiotics. Confirm any product with your provider.

How long do probiotics take to work for constipation?

The published trials ran 14 and 28 days, and the 14-day one is where the strongest transit-time effect showed up. That makes a two to four week trial the reasonable expectation, not a few days.

How many CFU should a pregnancy probiotic have?

The trials tested specific numbers rather than a general target: 17.2 billion CFU and 1.8 billion CFU for HN019, and 1 billion and 10 billion in the larger null trial. Higher was better in the study that worked, but a bigger CFU number on a different strain is not the same claim.

Is yogurt as good as a probiotic supplement?

It depends entirely on which strains a given yogurt carries and at what count, since effects are strain-specific. The Shirota study used a fermented 100 mL beverage rather than a capsule, so a food format is not inherently weaker. The strain on the label is what matters.
